1. What is your mission statement as an artist?
My platform is women empowerment, first. Then secondly its making a living doing what I love.
2. Many people have confined poetry to simply the page and the open mic stage. What was the inspiration that lead you to spearhead nontraditional poetry projects such as “conversations with poets” and the “soundbytes nyc poetry festival” ?
My partner, Jive Poetic, and I conceived the festival idea after traveling for over 5 years out of state for an open conference for performance poets and literary poets alike. We wanted to offer a legitimate event with workshops, networking, slam competitions and a culminating event that could only be achieved in NYC: on Broadway.
As far as Conversations…that was my chance to challenge the artists that say they don’t know their history with a one-on-one q&a and reading from the greats. We’ve interviewed Abiodune Oyewole of the Last Poets, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, Patrick Rosal and founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe: Miguel Algarin.
3. As host of the Friday Night Slam at the renowned Nuyorican Cafe and SlamMistress & Captain of the 2007 Nuyorican Slam Team, how would you describe the importance of such venues for the continual existence of poetry?
The legacy of the Nuyo is incomparable. It is indeed the platform for whichever generation decides to use their voice. The beauty of the Nuyo is the people have the power and they don’t play.
4. Being a writer and poetry “organizer” can be a discouraging journey. Describe a moment, where you said it’s all worth it?
It was when I published my first anthology, HIS RIB. The anthology features all of my favorite writers: Patricia Smith (did the foreword), Bassey Ikpi, Jaha Zainabu, Falu, Aja-Monet, April Jones, Rachel Kahn, Marty McConnell, Lynne Procope, Kim Trusty, Heather Taylor and so many more. Over 40 women are in those pages and they have all inspired me one time or another.
5. Where do you see yourself in the next decade?
Hopefully I will still be publishing books and receiving the big bucks for the poetry festival. (lol)
I have PoetCD.com, an online marketing and distribution company for poets and I am really trying to launch that to the next level. Its for poets touring, you get credit card machines, or if you don’t have a website, we offer online sales as well. Its an amazing thing.
6. Where so you see poetry in the next decade?
Saving the lives of our youth and hopefully, saving us from ourselves.
