Child’s Play: A Poetic Response to the Black Doll vs White Doll Experiment by Myisha Cherry

Barbie is not a toy
but a real person
a real image
a real god
worshipped in the minds
of black kids
who no longer
feel the need to
play house or play love
with themselves
any longer
their choice
mirrors our hidden choice
our grown up hidden lies
of self hate
our hidden reason for
why we perhaps choose
Hillary’s doll
over Obama’s
without knowing either’s platform
Becky’s doll
over Keisha’s
without knowing either’s heart
Wrapped in paperbag skin
we buy the poisoness lies
and inject them into our children
who grow into black adults
that make childlike choices
for out of the mouth of babes…
we shall see our real hearts
and maybe see the desperate need to
finally start
loving & choosing
our good
beautiful
selves
once more
